La chanson parle de la nostalgie d'un homme qui se souvient de sa compagne, Mary Jo, connue sous le nom de Gypsy Rose. Il la cherche désespérément, se rappelant des jours heureux où elle était à ses côtés, avant qu'elle ne s'éloigne pour se produire dans un spectacle de burlesque. À travers ses mots, il exprime sa tristesse et son désir de la retrouver, tout en réalisant que la réalité de sa situation est bien plus complexe et douloureuse. L’histoire se déroule dans les années 70 et capture l'atmosphère d'un monde où le glamour des spectacles et la simple vie familiale s'affrontent. Les souvenirs joyeux de moments passés plongent dans la mélancolie, alors que le protagoniste fait face à la solitude et au vide laissés par l'absence de celle qu'il aime.
