La chanson raconte l’histoire d’un vieux rapiat nommé Silas, qui garde toute sa fortune dans une petite boîte noire, qu’il traite comme un trésor précieux. Il refuse de dépenser un centime, à tel point qu’il néglige même ses besoins fondamentaux, se contentant de vêtements usés et ne se lavaillant jamais pour économiser sur le savon. Les enfants du quartier le reconnaissent facilement et se moquent de lui en raison de son obsession pour l’argent. Malgré ses efforts pour protéger sa richesse, comme acheter un coffre-fort et un chien de garde, il réalise, à la fin, qu'il n’a en réalité plus d’argent du tout. Cette histoire illustre les dangers du matérialisme excessif et la solitude qui en découle.
