Cette chanson raconte l'histoire d'un joyeux vagabond qui campait près d'un plan d'eau, profitant de la fraîcheur d'un arbre. Tout en surveillant son bouillon qui bout, il chante et attend son heure. L'intrigue se complique lorsque le vagabond réussit à capturer un mouton, mais il est ensuite confronté par un propriétaire de terre et des policiers qui viennent le chercher. Pour échapper à cette situation, il saute dans l'eau du billabong, disant qu'il ne se laissera pas prendre vivant, et son esprit hanterait les lieux. Cette mélodie est souvent considérée comme un hymne non officiel de l'Australie, évoquant des thèmes de liberté et d'aventure, tout en plongeant dans la culture australienne rurale. L'atmosphère est à la fois joyeuse et mélancolique, capturant l'esprit d'un pays vaste et sauvage.
