La chanson évoque un jardin où se retrouvent des femmes de bonne société, dans une ambiance à la fois légère et chargée de rumeurs. On y parle d'une tristesse liée à une jeune fille, Marge Miller, qui se retrouve au centre d'un scandale à cause de sa relation avec un garçon qui la déçoit. Les conversations entre les dames révèlent non seulement des commérages sur la vie des uns et des autres, mais mettent également en lumière une absence de compassion face aux malheurs d’autrui. Cette rencontre quotidienne au jardin devient donc un lieu de bavardages où il est difficile d’échapper aux jugements hâtifs et à l'indifférence.
