Billy Green
Stan Rogers
|_ _ _|_ Attend_ you all good countrymen_ my name is Billy_ Green_ And I_ will tell of things_ I did_ when_ I was just nine_-teen_ I helped_ defeat the Yank invader_ there can be no-o_ doubt_ Yet la_-tely men forget_ the name_ of_ Billy_ Green the Scout_ 'Twas on_ a Sunday morn' in June when first_ we heard_ the sound_ Three thou_-sand Yankees_ on the road_ to camp_ below Green_-town_ Two Ge_-nerals_ Artillery_ and_ Company of_ horse_ With ma_-ny rank and file afoot_ they were_ a mighty force_ Says I_ to brother_ Levi_ "Well_ we still_ can have some fun!_ We'll creep_ and whoop like In-di-ans to try to make them_ run!"_ Which then_ we did both loud and long much to the Yanks' dismay_ They fired_ their pop-gun muskets once and then_ they ran away!_ Well first_ they plundered Stoney Creek and_ then John Gage's farm_ They cut his fences for their fires although the day was_ warm_ They bound_ my brother_ Isaac up and_ took him_ from his home_ They pillaged all_ the countryside_ no mer_-cy there was shown_ Then says I_ to myself_ "Now Billy_ this_ will never_ do_ Those scur_-vy Yanks_ are not the match_ for Loyalists like_ you"_ My brother's_ horse_ I quickly caught_ and_ put him_ to a run_ And reached_ the British_ camp_ upon_ the Heights of Burlington_ Says I_ to Colo_-nel Har_-vey_ "Now_ let there be no delay_ If we're_ to reach the Yan_-kee camp_ before the break of_ day_ I'll take_ you through the woods by_ night where I know every_ tree_ And ere_ the dawn you surely can_ surprise_ the enemy"_ With men_ and guns_ we then set forth_ the e_-nemy_ to seek_ Across_ the beach_ at Burlington_ and then to Red Hill_ Creek;_ We came_ upon their sentries we surprised them every_ one_ One died_ upon my sword_ and all_ the others_ off they run_ And so_ it was_ we were in place one hour_ before_ dawn_ We fired_ three times upon the camp_ and then we marched_ along_ We fired_ again and charged as Colonel Harvey gave_ the word_ And put_ the enemy_ to fight with ba-yo-net and_ sword!_ With great_ confusion in_ the camp_ two Ge-ne-rals were caught_ The Colo_-nel and his men made their ar-til-le-ry as_ naught_ We killed over two hundred and_ we captured all the rest;_ Nor did_ we lose but eighty men;_ of them_ we had the best_ And so_ it was I played the man_ though I was but nineteen_ I led our forces through the night that_ this land_ would be free_ I foiled_ the Yank invaders and I_ helped put them to route_ So_ let no man_ forget the name_ of Billy_ Green_ the Scout!_
