La chanson évoque un épouvantail noir et vert qui se tient dans un champ d'orge. Il ne semble pas soucier des oiseaux qui se posent sur son chapeau ou des rongeurs qui s'agitent autour de lui. Sa posture immobile et son aire mélancolique laissent transparaître une certaine tristesse face à la vie, bien qu'il semble avoir accepté son sort. Au fond, il symbolise une forme de résignation, conscient que la vie n'est pas toujours cruelle, mais qu'elle manquait d'animation et de pensées.
