La chanson évoque la vie ordinaire d'un homme de Milwaukee dont l'existence paisible prend un tournant tragique lorsque sa femme met fin à ses jours. La mort devient alors le point de départ d'une réflexion sur la condition humaine, comme une loterie où beaucoup perdent et quelques-uns triomphent, souvent au détriment des autres.
