La chanson raconte l’histoire de John Oaks, un homme engagé dans la protection de la nature et des ressources agricoles de son quartier. Ancien hippie, il est devenu un défenseur des arbres et des agriculteurs face à des réglementations qu'il juge injustes. Alors qu'il s'oppose aux abus de pouvoir des politiciens et à l'oppression des travailleurs, il se retrouve dans une situation tragique au cours d'une manifestation. Le récit met en lumière les tensions entre la loi et la justice, culminant dans un affrontement avec la police qui finit par coûter la vie à John. À travers cette histoire, on perçoit une lutte pour la dignité et la protection de l'environnement, marquée par des conséquences violentes et désolantes.
