La chanson raconte l'histoire d'un musicien qui, après une performance à Penzance, se retrouve à faire du stop pour rentrer chez lui, en Geordieland, le jour de Noël. La nuit précédente, la neige est tombée, rendant son voyage plus difficile. Alors qu'il monte dans un camion, il réalise à quel point il est isolé, un vagabond sans invitation, contemplant un paysage vaste et silencieux recouvert de neige. Ce moment de solitude illustre à la fois le désespoir et l'espoir d'un homme qui, malgré les épreuves, avance sur son chemin.
