La chanson évoque de manière humoristique l'accident tragique d'un moufette écrasé sur la route. L'auteur décrit la scène et fait allusion à l'odeur nauséabonde qui s'en dégage, en soulignant que même si on ne veut pas regarder, l'odeur est inévitable. Au fil des vers, il élargit le propos à d'autres animaux morts, créant une sorte de tableau macabre et comique de la faune sur les routes. On peut imaginer ce moment nocturne où l'on traverse une route, et où l’observation des carcasses d'animaux soulève une réflexion amusante, mais aussi un peu triste, sur la vie et la mortalité. C'est une façon de traiter avec légèreté les imprévus de la vie.
