La chanson raconte l'histoire tragique de sept fils, dont deux sont jumeaux, qui se battent tous pour l'amour véritable dans la région de Yarrow. Une fille rêve de son bien-aimé, mais ce rêve se transforme rapidement en cauchemar lorsqu'elle découvre qu'il a été tué. Dans sa douleur, elle le cherche partout et le trouve enfin, mort dans les buissons humides de Yarrow. Dévastée par cette perte, elle demande à sa mère de préparer son lit pour accueillir son chagrin, puis elle se rend au bord de la rivière où elle choisit de mourir à son tour, montrant ainsi l'intensité de son amour et de sa désespérance. Cette histoire évoque les thèmes de l'amour, de la perte et du sacrifice, immergeant l'auditeur dans un univers empreint de mélancolie.
