La chanson évoque une relation compliquée où l'amour est à la fois une source de joie et de souffrance. Le protagoniste reçoit une rose empoisonnée, symbole des sentiments ambivalents que lui inspire son partenaire. Même si une partie de son amour lui reste accessible, il est conscient des blessures que cela entraîne.
