La chanson évoque la période difficile d'une rupture, où l'on réalise que l'autre personne reprend des objets symboliques, comme un vieux manteau de pluie ou un parapluie. Ces gestes traduisent une séparation qui fait mal, même si l’on tente de rester fort. Le protagoniste se sent à la fois libre et seul, comme un combattant qui, malgré ses blessures, continue d’avancer dans un monde froid et sans espoir. Au milieu de cette mélancolie, il prend conscience de sa liberté, tout en étant confronté à la nostalgie et à la douleur d’un passé encore présent.
