La chanson évoque l'histoire poignante de deux personnages, John et Elzevir, dont la vie est marquée par la souffrance et l'attente. John est prisonnier à cause d'un diamant maudit et, tout en subissant un sort tragique, Elzevir endure douze années de captivité sans jamais exprimer de rancœur. Le refrain fait résonner le désir de retour et de retrouvailles, tandis que Grace, l’amour de John, attend inlassablement son retour avec une lueur d'espoir, symbolisée par une bougie allumée à sa fenêtre. Le contexte semble ancré dans un cadre maritime, où les tempêtes et la quête de liberté font écho à la douleur de ceux qui aiment sans relâche.
