La chanson narre l'histoire d'un voyageur en pleine nuit, sur une route ouverte, qui se souvient d'un long parcours de préparation. Il se rapproche de son but, mais il entend des mises en garde au sujet d'un mystérieux passeur qu'il doit rencontrer sur une rivière. L'ambiance est teintée de danger et d'incertitude, avec des voix qui l'avertissent de ne pas céder aux pressions et de ne pas payer le passeur avant d’atteindre l’autre rive. Le contexte évoque une lutte intérieure et un choix crucial, où le personnage est confronté à la tentation et aux conséquences de ses décisions. Le ton est à la fois sombre et épique, comme si le destin du voyageur était suspendu à un fil, soulignant l’importance de résister à la précipitation et de faire preuve de sagesse sur le chemin de l’inconnu.
