La chanson évoque une expérience troublante vécue par le narrateur, qui se remémore un moment en 1964 où une étrange sensation l'a envahi. Cette expérience devient rapidement absurde et presque surréaliste avec l'apparition soudaine d'un singe, symbole d'une distraction ou d'un poids mental. À partir de cet incident, il se retrouve à lutter contre des difficultés personnelles, cherchant à s'éloigner de ceux qui l'entourent, tout en étant hanté par cette image du singe qui le représente à la fois comme une obsession et un fardeau.
